Al “Lil Fats” Jackson

Al “Lil Fats” Jackson is a musician and entertainer from south Louisiana. He specializes in New Orleans R&B. He is well known for his tribute to the legendary Fats Domino.

Al has released three CDs. His first was nominated for a “Big Easy Award” in 1998. Al grew up listening to classic New Orleans R&B and it became part of his spirit. Before he was in kindergarten, his favorite entertainer was Fats Domino. He would listen over and over again to records given to him by his grandfather, which he collected from his grandmother’s jukebox. Al’s grandmother owned the vet’s club where she booked such artists as Fats Domino, Lloyd Price and Tommy Ridgley. With artists such as these, it’s no wonder that Al fell in love with R&B. Although Al never has taken formal music lessons, he played many different instruments at his beloved Higgins High School. He always played supporting roles. He never imagined that he would become the artist he is today. Thanks to the prodding of his mother, he apprehensively accepted an offer to play at her office Christmas party. It was there that Al met Mr. Joe Cardenia. Joe took Al under his wing and booked him all over the New Orleans area. He was his first agent and he taught him a lot. One of the most important times in Al’s life was when he met his idol, Fats Domino in 1997. They fast became friends. Al values Fats’ advice and treasures the times he has had the opportunity to visit fats at his home and play the piano with him. He has such admiration for Fats. Al was the entertainment at Tipitina’s in New Orleans when Fats Domino was reissued the Grammy awards he lost in Hurricane Katrina. He also performed at Tipitina’s to celebrate Fats’ birthday in 2008. It was a great honor for Al to be chosen for these two events honoring his idol. At their first experience of a live performance of Al “Lil Fats” Jackson, audiences are always amazed that this young man has already accomplished the mastering of rhythm and blues in the New Orleans style. His technique, sincerity and enthusiasm are all qualities which are the result of his rearing in New Orleans by a loving and extended family. Although Al does a lot of private functions, you can usually see him at one of the many fairs and festivals in the New Orleans area or at one of the many casinos in Louisiana or Mississippi. Because of the fact that Al was fortunate to grow up surrounded by such a supportive family, he is able to do what he loves the most which is write, play and sing R&B. It was his grandfather who gave him a love for New Orleans music, his great grandmother and grandmother who showed him the meaning of his faith, and his mother who is responsible for his self-esteem and moral values. Al feels that without his family and close friends he would not be the person or entertainer he is today. These people made his success possible.
